On March 30, 2012, my nearly 3 year old Arabian gelding was spooked as a storm blew in, and took off down an asphalt road at the equestrian center where I board him. He made a sharp turn for the barn, and lost his footing. He fell hard on the asphalt and slid, coming up with major road rash, similar to what a motorcycle rider might have after a bad fall.
The next morning the vet had to debride the wounds and discovered that below his right elbow, not only did he have a huge (4" by 3") deep abrasion, but he had a 3 inch high "pocket" above that abrasion where the skin was folded down over another extremely deep abrasion. There was nothing to stitch, so she treated it topically and he went on antibiotics.
The veterinarian's regimen was for me to flush the wound and scrub it with betadine and water, twice per day, then treat topically with biozide ointment. Well, just imagine trying to scrub and flush with a syringe under a pocket, where every layer of skin is gone, on a 3 year old baby who is in pain and scared to death! Then she suggested I drug him daily for this if he was too feisty.
Instead, I opted to flush it with the cool water from a hose, and spray inside and out with the Tea Pro spray. I'd used to several years ago with tremendous success on another baby horse who had an accident leaving a raw, painful wound. Miraculously he tolerated this spray fine, as it was not painful. Once or twice a day for several weeks I did this treatment, using the Healing Tree products. As it started to form new layers of skin, I then began to treat topically with the T Zon dermal cream. Again, no pain response from my horse and it didn't stain and make a disgusting mess as did the biozide.
I have included photos. He had several other wounds on his legs but this was the largest, so therefore my focus. Today it has been exactly two months, and all he has left is a 1/2" by 1/2" scab which is healing rapidly. The pocket healed fine, no infection, and has sealed back down. The scarring looks like it will be extremely minimal. Once again, I am EXTREMELY impressed and, my horse suffered minimal discomfort with these products. Thank you!!!
Sincerely,
Jenny
